In this post we will be looking at Atypical, the coming of age original comedy from Netflix.
Keir Gilchrist plays Sam Gardner, a high school senior on the autism spectrum, trying to navigate dating, school and just being a teenager. Sam’s desire for more independence leads the entire family on a journey of self-discovery. Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Sam Rapaport star as Sam’s parents.
Atypical was created and written by Robia Rashid and Academy-Award winning producer Seth Gordon (The Goldbergs). Professor of special education Michelle Dean was brought into the production to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder.
As you can imagine, there are many opinions about the show which debuts on August 11th on Netflix. The Mighty features reviews from three people who watched the first episode. Lamar Hardwick and Erin Clemens, who are on the autism spectrum, and Jodi Murphy, a mother of a child on the spectrum. Read the interview with their thoughts on The Mighty website.
Take a look at the trailer and let us know if Atypical is a show you will be watching or any thoughts you have on this eight-episode series.
Our next post on new TV shows featuring characters with autism will be The Good Doctor, debuting on ABC this fall.
